Ah, the Death card, the most feared in the entire deck and arguably the most misunderstood. If this card has shown up in your reading and your stomach just dropped, take a breath. It does not mean literal death.
Let me explain what the Death card actually means in a tarot reading. It is about is the continuous cycle of endings and beginnings that every single one of us moves through in life. This card clears the way so that something new can come through. Which is more often than not something better and more aligned with who you are. with who you're becoming.
In the context of The Fool’s Journey, Death's arrival is inevitable. After the previous cards of Hanged Man, Justice & Hermit, all of which represent shedding old layers and surrendering to forces greater than ourselves, Death is a natural outcome. It shows us what we've grown beyond, and asks us firmly but not unkindly to release it.
Symbolism and Imagery of Death Tarot Card
In the Rider-Waite deck, we have a skeletal knight riding a horse. The knight represents death itself, whilst the horse is purity and movement which cleanses us to make space for new beginnings. The figures shown are King, maiden, child and Bishop. This shows Death as an equaliser, and doesn’t discriminate. The sun in the background represents rebirth and new beginnings. And the pillars are moving through the threshold and duality, which is a common theme in the Major Arcana.

I love the interpretation in the Robin Wood deck. Death stands in a birch wood forest, where birch is a symbol of transformation and new beginnings. He blocks the path that has been walked for years, the one that is simply no longer meant for you. But rather than leaving you stranded, Death points the way to a different path entirely. There are pebbles on the ground to show it will be challenging. But a butterfly lights the way to show this a path of growth and beauty that is waiting for you around the corner.
This is the true meaning of Death: not an ending without purpose, but one that brings in new beginnings.
Upright Death Tarot Card Meaning in a Reading Explained
There's a lot of change happening in your life right now.
You may be coming face to face with the reality that something you counted on, something that felt like a certainty, is no longer a viable option. This can be an unexpected u-turn where you're having to navigate the fallout of it. Perhaps it's also a time of recognising that no matter how many times you try the same thing over and over again, you are always left with the same result. And now you're faced with having to walk away.
Whatever this ending looks like for you, Death wants you to know: this is part of the process of life. What is ending needs to end, even if it doesn't feel fair right now. The path you were walking was never truly yours to stay on, and as painful as this moment is, what comes next is far more in alignment with who you're meant to be.
This isn't about dismissing the grief or the difficulty of what you're experiencing: those feelings are real and they matter. But when you're ready, Death invites you to broaden your awareness: What is this ending making space for? When the dust settles, what new direction begins to emerge?
Everything is unfolding as it's meant to. This is a natural life cycle, not a punishment.
In the meantime, this is a wonderful time to ground yourself in what feels joyful and nourishing. Find the things that bring you back to the present moment, as they'll help you find clarity when you need it most.
Reversed Meaning of Death Tarot Card
As always, reversed meanings depend on context. Tune into your intuition and the surrounding cards to sense which interpretation fits your situation best.

An Obstacle on Your Path
Here, you're resisting this change with everything you've got. Death is here to gently (or not so gently) remind you that it's happening regardless. You're trying to keep pushing down a path that is no longer meant for you, simply because it's familiar. But that resistance is creating friction in your current reality, not protecting you from it.
It's time to lift your eyes and look at what other paths are opening up, rather than forcing yourself into a space that no longer fits. Remind yourself of the times you've faced difficulty before and come through it stronger than you expected. You've done hard things and you can do this too.
Shadow Side
In the shadow position, Death is brining up a lot to the surface that might be clouding your judgement of your current situation. You are facing some difficult endings which is bringing up a lot of pain and shame.
A note here is that it's rising to the surface not so you'll identify with it, but so you can release all of this pain. There is a new path opening up for you, but you'll only see it when you ground yourself in your reality. Go outside, call a friend, read a book. Do something nourishing for yourself and the answers will reveal themselves in time.
Final Thoughts
Death is not a card to dread. It's a card of profound honesty, and it shows you what is truly over so that you can stop spending your energy holding on, and start directing it toward what's beginning.
Every ending in your life has brought you to where you are now. This one will too. Trust the cycle, be compassionate with yourself through the transition, and know that the sun is always rising on the other side.
