The Hierophant Tarot Card: Symbolism, Interpretation and Upright Meaning

Updated: Sep 4

Traditional Hierophant tarot card from Rider Waite deck showing a papal figure with two followers

When I first started learning tarot, the meaning of the Hierophant tarot card really confused me. The interpretations I came across often described him as a helpful mentor or teacher, and someone we’re meant to seek out for support and guidance. But when I looked at the imagery on the card, I felt a real disconnect. If he’s supposed to help us, why did the picture make me feel so boxed in?

In the context of the Fool’s Journey, the Hierophant is the first card where the Fool steps beyond individual separation to connect with a broader system. Sitting on the timeline of early life experiences, it represents our first encounters with institutional learning: school, tradition, and social rules. This is where we begin to learn how to “fit in,” and where we can pick up unhelpful beliefs and about ourselves and the world around us.

Symbolism and Imagery in The Hierophant Tarot Card

On the Rider-Waite card, we see a papal figure seated in ornate robes, with two people kneeling before him. He wears a decorative crown and sits between two pillars, echoing the High Priestess, suggesting a role as a bridge between dualities. Yet, the colour palette of stone and grey gives the scene a more rigid and formal feel. His elevated position suggests he holds the knowledge or riches others must follow to attain.

In the Robin Wood Tarot, the imagery is similar: two young acolytes in simple clothing stand before the richly adorned papal figure. Again, we have the stone pillars and the feeling of being boxed in by ideals or tradition. But here, there’s a subtle twist - the acolyte on the right has a slight smile, hinting at a desire to break free from these rigid constraints. Cracks in the stonework suggest the structure isn’t absolute and it’s something we can move beyond.

Upright Hierophant Tarot Card Meaning

The Hierophant appears when you're giving too much of your power away to someone you see as more knowledgeable or successful. Perhaps their mentorship once helped you, but now you're taking their advice as unquestionable truth, even when it clashes with your inner guidance. It’s important for you to listen to what they have to say, but to not dismiss your own wisdom in the process. Ask yourself: do you actually want to be following their path? Or is this a way of moving through the world that is more authentic to you?

This card also shows up when you've unconsciously taken on others’ expectations about who you should be. These external ideals may feel like they offer security or status, but they are now draining your energy and limiting your agency. If you're feeling boxed in right now, it's time to pay attention. You may be following what you feel will make you the most accepted by others rather than what is truly aligned to your soul.

This card is a nudge to root back into self-trust. Take what resonates from the people around you, but remember that this is your life, not theirs. It's time to break out of this box and start living more in your full and beautiful self.

Reversed Hierophant Tarot Card Meaning

Reversed cards can have different meanings depending on the surrounding cards, so pay close attention to your intuition when you see the Hierophant this way.

Obstacle on Your Path

In reverse, you may be overly influenced by someone else's perspective or advice, and it’s become a stumbling block. If you’re feeling stifled by someone’s perspective of what they think you should be doing, take a step back and ask yourself if this is really helpful for you. And if it’s not, tune in to your body and ask yourself what you feel is the next basic action.

Stuck in Subconscious

The reversed Hierophant can also indicate a deep-seated belief that’s holding you back, which is often inherited from a teacher, parent, or authority figure. Maybe you were told things like "you can't make money being creative" or "people like you don’t get to be successful." These messages can shape the story you tell yourself. Now might be the time to trace those beliefs back and gently ask: Is that actually true?

Final Thoughts

The Hierophant can represent valuable wisdom and tradition, he also challenges us to question the systems and beliefs we’ve inherited. This card invites you to reflect on where you’ve been following someone else's path, perhaps out of habit or the desire to feel secure, and gently guides you back to your own inner compass.

There’s nothing wrong with learning from others, but the Hierophant reminds us that true wisdom is found when we take what resonates and leave the rest behind. You have permission to break the mould. Your path doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s to be valid, meaningful, or successful.

Trust yourself. You’re allowed to outgrow the structures that once felt safe.
