The Magician is the masculine keeper of magic in the tarot, guiding us in how we can bring the intangible into the tangible, and how to create something real in our lives. He appears after The Fool in the Fool’s Journey, the symbolic story arc of the Major Arcana cards. As the first point of separation from the collective, The Magician marks the moment where the Fool begins to explore the self in isolation. First through the lens of the masculine (The Magician), and later through the feminine (The High Priestess).
Symbolism and Imagery of The Magician Tarot Card
The meaning of the Magician tarot card holds rich layers of symbolism that shape the deeper lessons of this card. In the classic Rider-Waite tarot deck, he raises one hand to the sky while the other points to the ground, embodying the principle of “As Above, So Below.” This posture shows him as a channel between higher realms and the physical world, and a powerful conduit for manifestation. Above his head floats the infinity symbol, representing his divine connection and the eternal flow of energy.

In the Robin Wood tarot deck, The Magician sits between two lit candles, symbolising his ability to transform his ideas into reality. The infinity symbol is in his hand, suggesting a conscious relationship with this flow—he doesn’t try to control it, but instead works with it. His ritual tools are laid out before him, and he wears stag antlers, a nod to his confidence, leadership, and natural authority.
The Upright Meaning of The Magician
When The Magician appears upright in a tarot reading, he comes as a powerful reminder of your inherent magic and ability to create. He invites you to step into your personal power and to remember that while you can’t force life to bend to your will, you can choose how to show up in your ritual of creation.
The infinity sign in his hand reminds you that life flows in cycles. Expansion is always followed by contraction. The key is not to resist, but to flow with what is, rather than clinging to what you think should be.
The tools laid out on The Magician’s table symbolise the elements of life you can harness:
The Cup: Are you filling your emotional cup from a place of fulfilment? Are your relationships nourishing you?
The Wand: Are you using your energy intentionally? Are you channelling your passion into what truly lights you up?
The Sword: Are you seeing situations clearly, or are you caught in stories and mental loops that no longer serve you?
The Pentacle: Are you grounded in the physical world? Do you need to slow down, get into nature, or reconnect with your environment?
The Magician reminds you that your power lies in how you use these tools. You may never control the infinite cycles of life, but you can choose to show up with presence, clarity, and intention.
The Magician Tarot Card Meaning in Reverse

It’s important to remember that reversed tarot cards don’t carry a fixed meaning. They offer nuance, and their message depends on the cards around them and what your intuition is telling you. So lean into which meaning resonates with you and your situation the most:
Shadow Side
When The Magician appears reversed, it can suggest you’re trying too hard to control external circumstances. You may have tapped into your personal power—but now you’re pushing too far, attempting to manipulate forces that are simply beyond your grasp. This card encourages you to pause. Instead of exerting more pressure, reflect on which element in your life feels out of balance. That’s where your true magic lies.
Obstacle on Your Path
Alternatively, The Magician reversed may show up when you’re not stepping into your power at all. You might be feeling disconnected, passive, or powerless—watching life happen around you instead of taking part in it. This card urges you to get back to basics. Which of the four tools on the table have you been neglecting? Where can you re-ignite your sense of agency and creative spark? Start there.
