This is the most dramatic card in the deck, and for good reason! The Tower is on the last line of The Fool’s Journey, which is the most confrontational story arc. It’s where we have to face up to those parts of ourselves we’ve shunned and find kindness and compassion for them. The Tower comes after The Devil, where these more shameful aspects of ourselves have started to make themselves known. But have no fear! The Star follows The Tower, so from wreckage we can rebuild again.

This card shows a tower in the middle of nowhere being hit by a bolt of lightning, with two figures being thrown from the building as the building burns behind them. The bolt of lightning symbolises that sharp realisation of truth that hits us and we can’t go back to the way things were before. The characters are in rich clothing, showing that they have gained a lot of wealth from the way things were. The crown shows that this destabilising force comes from a higher level, so it’s not a personal attack. The tower is built on unstable foundations, showing us that it needed to crumble. 

The Robin Wood tarot shows us much the same image, with the tower being in the middle of the water this time. The waves are choppy to show how destabilising a time this can be for us in our lives. And it has been erected in the middle of nowhere to show the isolation that can come from living in these towers.

You are going through a difficult time right now, and it’s important for you to look after yourself in this process.

A lot of structures that were seen as sure things in your life have started to crumble, which is creating some harsh cracks in your reality. Perhaps it was a relationship you were sure was the one, a job that was meant to be a safe bet or maybe everything in your life is being shaken like a snow globe. Or even your entire identity seems to be crumbling around you. Either way, there’s a lot of things changing for you right now, and it feels out of your control. 

This may also relate to a person in your life showing you the truth of who they truly are, and that is creating a crumbling as it’s not the person you thought they were. Trust that this truth coming up right now is for the best, as there will be something better on the other side. 

What’s important to recognise when The Tower comes around is that these structures we’ve built for ourselves weren’t meant to last. They’ve been built out of previous pain or trauma to keep us safe, and for us to reconnect with who we truly are, these towers have to crumble. You may have gained a lot of wealth from existing this way, but this tower has been shrinking you piece by piece. It’s also left you isolated and away from all the good in the world, and has made it difficult to connect with other people.

Even though it may feel like you suddenly don’t know who you are right now, this is all part of the process. It’s time to ground yourself into what’s truly nurturing for you and with people who you can be yourself around. And if things start to really waver internally, it may also be time to seek professional help in whatever capacity that looks like.

It’s also important to let this tower crumble and not try to rebuild it out of habit. You were made for something greater than this tower, and it’s time to step outside of this box and inhabit yourself fully and truly. You deserve better.

Reversed cards can shift depending on where they sit in your spread, so pay attention to its position as well as your intuitive feeling as to which meaning resonates most.

An Obstacle on Your Path

For understandable reasons, you’re resisting this crumbling right now. You’re trying to distract yourself or avoid the fact that things are changing. But this is happening whether you like it or not!
