After the upheaval of The Devil and The Tower, The Star arrives as a welcome relief. The meaning of The Star tarot card offers a chance to breathe after so much change, and is an invitation to pause and reflect before moving forward.
The Star sits on the final story arc of the Fool's Journey, which is the most challenging part of the Major Arcana. This line is confrontational, where everything that isn’t true falls away to make space for who we truly are. And The Star is a welcome pause before moving onto the deeper lessons of the Major Arcana.
Symbolism of The Star Tarot Card
In the Rider Waite, we see a naked woman kneeling in front of a pool of water. She’s pouring water from a bowl into the pool whilst the other bowl nourishes the earth beside her.
Her nakedness symbolises the vulnerability that follows the upheaval of The Tower, where it has stripped away everything unnecessary. The pool represents the deep waters of the soul, while the earth reminds us that our physical lives also need care and attention.
The five streams of water are often associated with our five senses, encouraging us to reconnect with our bodies and the present moment. The seven stars above her relate to the Chakras, and the central star as our core essence.

The Robin Wood tarot offers a very similar image, but the tree behind the figure is bursting into spring blossom. To me, this symbolises the quiet season between periods of growth. It's a reminder to nourish the non-negotiable parts of our lives before we move into the next chapter.
Upright Meaning of The Star in a Tarot Reading
The Star appears to remind you that the worst has passed.
After a period of upheaval, you now have space to reflect on everything that's become clear. The challenges you've experienced have shown you what truly matters, and The Star gently encourages you to begin pouring your energy into those things.
What makes you feel nourished from the inside out? What continues to sustain you during difficult times? And how could you create a little more space for these things in your everyday life?
The Star reminds you that this is where your attention needs to be right now.
She’s also showing up to say that your physical world still needs your attention. Look at where you can create a warm and cosy environment for yourself, especially a space that allows you to grow slowly. After everything you've been through, it's important to create surroundings that feel safe and restorative.
This isn't a card of rushing ahead.
The Star invites you to slow down and look at what you need to support yourself during this time. This is the quiet pause before action, and she asks you to take care of yourself and your environment so you can receive the next chapter of your life.
You may feel inspired by the clarity you've gained and want to move forward immediately. But The Star gently reminds you to slow down and give yourself permission to stay in this quieter season for a little longer.
And to trust that slowing down doesn't mean you've stopped growing.
Reverse meaning of The Star Tarot Card
Reversed cards can shift depending on where they sit in your spread, so pay attention to its position as well as your intuitive feeling as to which meaning resonates most.

An Obstacle on Your Path
The Star may be pointing out that you're trying to move forward before you've fully allowed yourself to rest.
Perhaps you're focusing so much on what's next that you're overlooking what you need in the present moment. Rather than pushing ahead, this card encourages you to pause and fill your own cup first.
Ask yourself: where do you feel most supported and cared for? What makes you feel full from the inside out? How can you create more space for that in your life right now?
The answers to these questions will help you move forward with far greater strength than rushing ever could.
Shadow Side
In the shadow position, The Star can suggest you're pouring all of your energy into one area of life while neglecting another.
Perhaps you've been focusing on your inner world but ignoring your relationships. Or maybe you've been trying to perfect your external environment without listening to your deeper emotional needs.
Whatever it is, The Star invites you to gently rebalance.
Notice where your energy naturally wants to flow, and where something has been quietly asking for your care. This doesn’t require a drastic overhaul but gentle realignment. Focus on the small and consistent acts of nourishment that bring your inner and outer worlds back into harmony.
Final Thoughts on The Star Tarot Card
The Star reminds us that the pause is just as important as action on our healing journey. We can’t rush the process of growth, and The Star encourages us to reflect and recentre before we start pursuing the next chapter of our lives.
There is much wisdom to be found in this quiet space, and it’s important to take time to pour love and attention into these aspects of our lives.
The Star shows us the power in rest and not everything is found by striving to do more. But in simply resting and replenishing our well, and trusting in what is already unfolding.
